But the moment we stopped following the herds and began coercing the earth to yield a predictable harvest, everything changed. This was the true Dawn of Civilizations, born not from divine mandate, but from grain. With agriculture came surplus—food that could be stored, counted, and controlled. The need to manage this new wealth, defend it from rivals, and plan for future seasons meant that leadership could no longer be fluid or merit-based. The simple act of settling down, of building the first permanent walls, simultaneously created the first permanent social division.
